UDDHAV THACKERAY'S REQUESTS GOT REJECTED BY PM MODI

In the country to review the Covid-19 situation and to discuss the ongoing vaccination drive, PM Modi held a meeting with the chief ministers.

On Thursday, despite calls from many states to enlarge the vaccination shots for the younger people, PM Narendra Modi has announced that India will keep the vaccination shots for certain age groups.

In the meeting with PM Modi issue regarding the Covid-19 vaccine was discussed. PM Modi stated that the making of a new Covid-19 vaccine is under process.

"You know how much vaccine is being produced. Now it is not that we can set up factories overnight. We will need to prioritize according to the available stocks. It is not that we can move stocks to one state and we will get the results. This thinking is not correct. We will have to think of the entire country," Prime Minister Modi told chief ministers.

"The criteria set by more prosperous countries to vaccinate people against coronavirus is not different from what we have. You can study a bit. You are educated people and have all the information," PM Modi said. He also stated that reducing the wastage of vaccines is also a big part of Covid-19 management.

Instead of depending on vaccines, people need to focus on testing and need to take proper precautions, PM Modi said.

"Today, the problem is that we have forgotten about Covid-19 testing and have moved to vaccination. We have to remember that we had won the fight against Covid-19 without a vaccine. We have to emphasize on testing," PM Modi told the chief ministers.

India's Covaxin current capacity is around 75 million doses a month and roughly around 2.5 million doses a day, an average of 3.1 million doses a day have been delivered around the whole country, last week.

Over the age of 45 years and frontline workers are currently vaccinated in India.

To increase the reach of the nationwide Covid-19 vaccine, the demands have been raised by some chief ministers, but it got rejected by PM Modi.

Among them, the chief minister of Maharastra Uddhav Thackeray, earlier this week wrote a letter to PM Modi to approve the vaccination of people aged 25.

"I request you to lower it to 25, as the states facing the surge are having to place curbs to safeguard lives of the population. However, if a larger number of our young and working population is vaccinated, the intensity of the cases would be much lower than the treatment that they need today," Thackeray said in his letter.

The same goes with Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi's chief minister also wrote a letter to Modi, to remove the age-related restriction for the vaccine drive and for starting new vaccine sites to take some ease protocols.

When India recorded 1.26 lakh for Covid-19 cases, PM Modi lead a meeting. Since the pandemic, it is the highest daily caseload. The recent increasing cases have worried the officials.

The next four weeks are very critical, said NITI Aayog member, Dr. VK Paul.
