On Friday, the husband of Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip who was a leading figure in the British royal family for a great 70 years, died at the age of 99 in Buckingham Palace.

He was actually the Duke of Edinburgh as he was officially called, he was beside his wife’s side for the past 69 years of her reign, which was the longest in British history, during this time he had a reputation for being tough, no-nonsense attitude and a tendency for the occasional blunder.


Her Majesty with deep sorrow announces the death of her beloved husband, “His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” this statement came from the palace.

He was a Greek Prince who married Elizabeth in the year 1947, in the post World War Two period, he went on to play the key role in modernizing the monarchy, he was one of the key figures the Queen could turn to and trust behind the walls of the Buckingham Palace.

He admitted being a naval officer that he found it hard to give up the military habits he loved and took on the job as a monarch’s consort, in which there was no clear-cut constitutional role played.


In private, he was the head of his family, but protocol obliged him to be behind his wife’s always one step behind, after he completed more than 22.000 solo presences, he retired from his public duties in August 2017, although he was present in all official engagements.
