Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has expressed sorrow over the incident and ordered to investigate the whole matter behind it.

On Twitter, he said, "Sincere condolences to the families of the 9 brave deceased including the 4 firefighters, 2 Railways personnel and an Assistant Sub Inspector of Police (ASI) who have been fighting the fire at the Eastern Railways Strand road office in Kolkata."

"Railway officials including the GM are at the site and are working in coordination with the State Govt for rescue and relief efforts. We are committed to doing everything possible to ensure the safety of all concerned," in another tweet he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sadness over the whole matter and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured people.

"Saddened by the loss of lives due to the fire tragedy in Kolkata. In this hour of sadness, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest," Prime Minister Modi tweeted.

At around 11 P.M., West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the spot.“Seven people are dead. The police commissioner says two more may be missing. The tragedy took place because the elevator was used during the fire. We will give Rs 10 lakh to the families of those killed," Mamata Banerjee said.

"This is a railway property. Railways have a responsibility. Railways were unable to provide a map of the building. I don't want to do politics over the tragedy but, no one from the railways has come to the site," she added.

“I saw the fire and tried to douse it first by beating it with a cloth and then using a fire extinguisher kept on the floor. But it flared out of control and there was no way we could contain it. We soon had to rush out. One of my colleagues alerted the building’s guards and another one called the fire department as we rushed down the stairs while alerting employees on other floors and asking them to vacate the building,” a senior official who was on the 12th floor when the fire started, Debshankar Pramanik said.

Online ticket bookings were down due to the power switch off.

Fire Minister Sujit Bose was very disheartened by the situation and ordered a thorough inquiry to find out the reason behind the usage of the lift.
